  • Global Bilateral Migration

    Cette base de données présente des matrices internationales de migration bilatérale pour la période 1960-2000, désagrégées par sexe et fondées principalement sur la notion de migrant en tant que personne d’origine étrangère. Elle regroupe des informations tirées de plus d’un millier de recensements de population et de registres d’état-civil pour en tirer des matrices sur dix ans correspondant aux cinq derniers cycles de recensements achevés. Cela fait ressortir pour la première un tableau d’ensemble des migrations bilatérales à l’échelle mondiale dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle. Les données révèlent que le nombre mondial des migrants est passé de 92 à 165 millions entre 1960 et 2000. Les migrations nord-sud sont la composante qui affiche la plus forte progression, en valeur absolue comme en valeur relative. Les États-Unis restent le principal pays de destination : un cinquième de tous les migrants y vivent, et ce pays est aussi la destination numéro un des migrants de pas moins de 60 pays différents. Les migrations vers l’Europe de l’Ouest continuent de provenir en grande partie d’autres pays d’Europe. Grâce au pétrole, les pays du golfe Persique attirent une part importante des migrations en provenance du reste du Moyen-Orient, ainsi que d’Afrique du Nord et de l’Asie du Sud et du Sud-Est. Enfin, bien que le stock de migrants soit encore en majorité constitué d’hommes, la proportion de femmes a notablement augmenté entre 1960 et 2000.
